A Front Light That Stays Off the Screen
A monitor light bar sits on top of the screen and lights the desk in front of it, so you can see a notebook or keyboard without a desk lamp. The hard part is doing that without bouncing light off the screen or into your eyes. BenQ says the Halo 2’s front light is aimed at an 18° anti-glare angle so it lights the desk without reflecting on the screen or shining into your eyes. Brightness is stepless and color temperature runs from a warm 2700K to a cool 6500K, and BenQ quotes a color rendering index above 95, which matters to anyone who edits photos or judges color on paper.
The Backlight Is the Point
What separates the Halo 2 from cheaper bars is the second light on the back. It washes the wall behind the monitor, which BenQ says reduces the contrast between a bright screen and a dark room, so your eyes stay more relaxed in the evening. If you work late with the room lights off, this is the feature you are paying for. In a bright, sunny office it matters much less.
Wireless Dial and Automatic Features
Instead of touch buttons on the bar, the Halo 2 uses a wireless dial that sits on the desk and shows the current brightness and color temperature on a small display. The bar can switch on and off with the monitor, adjust brightness to the ambient light, and return to saved settings through a “My Favorite” mode. The clamp fits monitors 0.17 to 2.36 in thick, including curved screens from 1000R to 1800R, without touching the panel.
Limitations and Compromises
It is expensive: $179.10 when we checked, several times the price of capable budget bars such as the Quntis ScreenLinear Pro+. The listing does not publish a lux figure, so we compare features rather than brightness numbers. At 800 g it is heavier than most bars, and it adds height to the top of the monitor, which can interfere with a webcam clipped there. The backlight is white only; there are no RGB modes.
Setup and Care
Hang the clamp over the top edge of the monitor, plug the bar into a USB power source, pair the dial and set a favorite brightness and color temperature. Wipe the bar with a dry cloth.
Who Should Buy It?
- You work at a screen for long stretches, often in the evening
- Your desk has no room for a lamp
- You use a curved monitor (1000R–1800R)
- You want a premium work from home gift for someone who has the basics
Skip it if you mainly work in daylight or on a budget; the Quntis ScreenLinear Pro+ covers the front light for far less. See every option side by side in our monitor light bar reviews, and other desk gifts in our work from home gifts guide.
