From Sitting to Standing
Most laptop risers top out somewhere between 6 and 12 inches. The tounee is built for a different job: turning an ordinary desk into a part-time standing desk. A telescoping column, released with a button, takes the laptop from 2.1 inches up to 21 inches, which tounee says is enough to work standing as well as sitting.
When we checked, it carried 4.7 out of 5 stars from 4,283 Amazon ratings. tounee lists a 22 lb capacity, two pivot joints and a larger, heavier base to keep the tall column steady.
The 360° Base
The base turns a full circle, so you can swing the screen toward a colleague or a client across the desk without lifting the laptop. It is the same trick the rotating-base risers use, here combined with far more height.
What Standing Height Needs
At standing height the laptop’s own keyboard is useless for typing, so this stand only works with an external keyboard and mouse, ideally on a surface near elbow height. If you already own a standing desk, you do not need this much height; a regular riser such as the Lamicall will do. If you are thinking about standing more often, a balance board is a cheap companion; see our balance board for standing desk comparison.
Limitations and Compromises
A 21-inch column puts a laptop high above a small footprint, so it is more exposed to a knock than a low riser, even with tounee’s heavier base. At the time of writing it cost more than every riser here except the Roost V3, and it is bulkier to carry than the folding stands.
Who Should Buy It?
- You want to alternate between sitting and standing without a standing desk
- You need more height than a normal riser gives
- You share your screen across the desk
- Your laptop is 10 to 17 inches and up to 22 lb
Look elsewhere if you already have a standing desk (the Lamicall or the Nulaxy is enough), want a fixed set-and-forget stand (the Rain Design mStand) or travel often (the Roost V3).
