Rain Design 10038 mTower Vertical Laptop Stand — Single-Piece Aluminium, Space Gray

Rain Design mTower Review (2026) — Does a Fixed Slot Still Make Sense?

The Rain Design mTower is the premium end of this category and the only stand in this group with no adjustment at all. It is cut from a single piece of aluminium, sand-blasted and anodised to match Apple notebooks, and at $43.90 it is the most expensive of the five.

We reviewed it because a fixed slot is an unusual choice in 2026 and it deserves an honest hearing. What a single piece of metal buys you is rigidity — there are no screws to loosen, no arms to splay, and nothing to re-tighten in six months. What it costs you is flexibility: the slot is the size it is, and if your laptop does not suit it, there is no adjustment to reach for.

Quick verdict: the Rain Design mTower scores 8.0/10. It is the best-built stand here and the least adaptable. Buy it for a MacBook you are keeping.

Key Specifications

One Piece of Aluminium, and What That Buys

Every other stand in this group is assembled — two arms, a base, screws holding the geometry together. The mTower is cut from a single piece. That removes the one thing that goes wrong with adjustable docks over years of use: fasteners working loose until the slot no longer holds a constant width. There is nothing here to loosen, which is why this is the stand to buy if you intend to keep it for a decade.

The Fixed Slot — the Trade Being Made

Rain Design lists compatibility by machine rather than by millimetre: 2020 MacBook Air and MacBook Pro 13 and 16 inch, 2019 MacBook Air and MacBook Pro 13, 15 and 16 inch, and other laptops of similar height. That is a narrower promise than a stated range, and it is the honest reading of a fixed slot — it fits what it fits. Check your machine against that list before buying, because there is no adjustment to fall back on.

Finish Matched to Apple, and the Airflow Claim

The sand-blasted anodised Space Gray is matched to Apple notebooks, and on a desk with a MacBook it genuinely disappears in a way a generic silver bracket does not. Rain Design also states the stand increases airflow around the notebook to keep it cooler — a real benefit of standing a closed machine on its edge rather than leaving it flat, where the underside sits against the desk.

Limitations and Compromises

The fixed slot is the whole limitation and it is a significant one: no adjustment means no thick laptops, no sleeves, and no future-proofing against a different machine. At $43.90 it is more than twice the JARLINK, for a stand that does less. Compatibility is stated by model rather than by measurement, which is less useful when your laptop is not on the list. And 750 ratings, while healthy, is a fraction of the UGREEN’s evidence base.

Setup and Maintenance

There is nothing to set up and nothing to maintain — that is the point of a single piece of aluminium. Seat the machine and leave it. Clean the anodised finish with a dry microfibre cloth. The only real advice is to check fit properly in the first few days: a fixed slot that is slightly loose will let the machine rock, and unlike every other stand here there is no tension adjustment to correct it, so use the return window if it is not right.

Who Should Buy It?

• You own a recent MacBook Air or MacBook Pro
• You want the finish to match the machine exactly
• You value rigidity and intend to keep the stand for years
• You want nothing to loosen, re-tighten or adjust

Avoid it if your laptop is not on Rain Design’s stated list, if you dock inside a sleeve, or if you expect to change machines to something thicker. Any of the adjustable aluminium stands — the OMOTON in particular — will serve you better and cost less.

SoftPickr Verdict

The Rain Design vertical laptop stand scores 8.0/10. Single-piece aluminium — nothing to loosen, and the one compromise you are accepting is stated plainly above. Prices on Amazon move; the figure in this review was $43.90 at the time of writing and the live listing is the only accurate source.

Rain Design mTower review — Frequently Asked Questions

Does the Rain Design mTower adjust?

No. The slot is fixed. It is cut from a single piece of aluminium, which is what makes it rigid, and it is also why compatibility is stated by machine rather than by thickness range.

Which laptops does the mTower fit?

Rain Design lists the 2020 MacBook Air and MacBook Pro 13 and 16 inch, the 2019 MacBook Air and MacBook Pro 13, 15 and 16 inch, and other laptops of similar height.

Does a vertical stand help with cooling?

Rain Design states the mTower increases airflow around the notebook to keep it cooler. Standing a closed laptop on its edge does lift the underside off the desk, which is where heat normally gets trapped.

Is the mTower worth twice the price of a budget stand?

For a MacBook you are keeping, arguably yes — single-piece construction has nothing to work loose. For anything else, an adjustable aluminium stand is the more sensible buy.
