Built for the Bag
The Roost is the stand for people who work in more than one place. It weighs 6 oz, Roost says it packs impossibly thin, and it opens in one motion to the height you set last time. When we checked, it carried 4.8 out of 5 stars from 1,777 Amazon ratings and cost $89.95, the most in this comparison.
The price buys two things the cheaper folding risers do not have: a much higher screen lift and a rigid frame. Roost lists a lift of 6.5 to 12.5 inches, which gets the top of a screen to eye level even at a low café table.
PivotGrips and the Truss Frame
Instead of fixed hooks, the V3 uses what Roost calls PivotGrips: self-adjusting grips that adapt to and lock onto any laptop from 12 to 18 inches. The frame is an interlocking truss, and Roost pitches it directly against rotating-base stands, which it says wobble. A two-handed lock sets the height so it does not slip while you type on an external keyboard.
What It Does Not Do
Roost does not publish a weight capacity, and the grips start at 12 inches, so a 10 or 11-inch notebook will not fit. Like every riser here, it needs an external keyboard and mouse; Roost says so in its own listing.
Limitations and Compromises
At $89.95 when we checked, the Roost costs several times as much as the BESIGN or the Nulaxy, which also fold. It skips laptops under 12 inches and has no published weight capacity.
Who Should Buy It?
- You work from home, office and travel and carry the stand every day
- You want the highest screen lift in a folding stand
- Your laptop is 12 to 18 inches
- You will pay more for less weight in your bag
Look elsewhere if the stand never leaves your desk (the Rain Design mStand or the Lamicall), you are on a tight budget (the BESIGN LS03 or the Nulaxy) or you want to stand (the tounee).
SoftPickr Verdict
The Roost V3 scores 8.3/10 and is our best laptop riser for travel. Prices on Amazon move; the figure in this review was $89.95 at the time of writing and the live listing is the only accurate source.
