Cheap, Small and Well Reviewed
For about $13, the HOMEE does the one job a knock box has: a padded bar to strike and a bin to catch the puck. HOMEE says the 4.8 in size is perfect for storing underneath most espresso machines, and more than 4,000 owners give it 4.5 stars. If you are not sure you need a knock box at all, this is the low-risk way to find out.
A Rubber Bar That Comes Out
The rubberized bar will not dent or scratch the portafilter, according to HOMEE, and it pulls out of its plastic holder so you can empty and clean the box. A non-slip rubber pad on the bottom keeps it from sliding and reduces noise.
Limitations and Compromises
The body is ABS plastic and it weighs only 10.4 oz, so it feels lighter under a hard knock than the steel boxes. HOMEE says the capacity is large enough that you do not have to empty it too often, but it does not publish a puck count.
Setup and Care
Pull the rubber bar out, empty the grounds (they make good compost) and rinse the box.
Who Should Buy It?
