A Key Lock for Shared Spaces
This is the only drawer in our comparison with a lock. A reinforced metal latch locks with a key, and two keys ship in the box. Mount-It! pitches it at shared offices, classrooms and home workspaces, and it is equally useful for keeping medication, cash or a work laptop away from children.
Steel Build, 11 lb Rating
The body and glide track are heavy-duty steel, and the drawer is rated for 11 lb, which covers chargers, a tablet, papers and everyday supplies. At 3.9 in tall and 17.7 in wide it is one of the roomier boxes here. The housing telescopes from 12.2 to 18.9 in, so it adapts to most desk depths.
Know the 6.7 in Opening First
Mount-It! is unusually upfront about the main compromise: the drawer slides out only 6.7 in once mounted, so the back of the interior stays under the desk. It is built for reaching in and grabbing supplies, not for a fully exposed file drawer. It also mounts only to wood or MDF desks at least 0.71 in thick with no crossbar in the way, so metal and glass tops are out.
Limitations and Compromises
At $89.99 it is the most expensive drawer here, and the 6.7 in opening means you reach into the back rather than seeing everything. It fits wood or MDF only. It has the fewest owner ratings in the group (61), so there is less long-term feedback than for the VIVO or Bostitch. Any drawer lock deters casual access; it is not a safe.
Setup and Care
Check that the desk is wood or MDF, at least 0.71 in thick, with no crossbar where the drawer will go. Extend the housing to your desk depth and fix it with the four included screws and a Phillips screwdriver. Store the spare key somewhere other than the desk.
Who Should Buy It?
- You need to lock documents, devices or personal items
- You share an office, a classroom or a home desk with children
- Your desk is wood or MDF at least 0.71 in thick
- You want steel construction and a lifetime warranty
Look elsewhere if you want to see the whole drawer when it opens: the Mount-It! large pencil drawer uses full-extension slides. If you do not need a lock, the VIVO 18 x 12 in drawer offers the same 11 lb rating for $30 less.
SoftPickr Verdict
The Mount-It! locking under desk drawer scores 8.1/10. If you need a lock, it is the one to buy: steel, rated for 11 lb, adjustable in depth and covered for life. If you do not, the limited 6.7 in opening and the $89.99 price make other drawers better value. Prices on Amazon move; the figure in this review was $89.99 at the time of writing and the live listing is the only accurate source.
