NARWAL Freo X Plus Review — Best Self-Emptying Robot Vacuum Under $200?

NARWAL Freo X Plus Review (2026) — Does a Compressing Dust Bin Beat a Dock?

The NARWAL Freo X Plus is a robot vacuum and mop that solves the emptying problem without a giant self-empty tower. Instead of shipping a base station with a bag inside it, Narwal put the compression inside the robot: after each run it packs the debris down into a sealed bin that the company rates for roughly seven weeks of use. The dock is a thin charging plate, and the machine is a normal-height puck rather than a piece of furniture in your hallway.

We reviewed it because that trade is genuinely different from what everyone else sells at this price. Self-empty towers cost more, take up a corner, and need proprietary bags forever. The Freo X Plus asks you to empty a bin once every month or two and gives you 7,800Pa of suction, LiDAR mapping and a tangle-free brush for around $160. The catch is not the hardware. It is the software: the 4.0 average on Amazon is driven almost entirely by app and Wi-Fi complaints, not by cleaning performance.

Quick verdict: the NARWAL Freo X Plus scores 7.7/10 in this SoftPickr review. It cleans well above its price and stores dirt cleverly, but the app is the weak link and you should buy it expecting that.

Key Specifications

Compression Instead of a Tower

Every self-empty robot vacuum solves the same problem the same way: build a tall dock, put a vacuum motor and a bag in it, and suck the robot dry after each run. It works, but you pay for it twice — once at purchase and then forever in bags — and you give up a corner of a room to a machine the size of a kitchen bin.

The Freo X Plus takes the other route. A compression mechanism inside the robot presses each run’s debris into a sealed block, so the same volume of bin holds far more before it needs attention. In practice a two-bedroom flat with one shedding cat went about five weeks before the bin was genuinely full, which is short of the seven-week claim but nowhere near the every-other-run emptying a conventional 300 ml bin demands.

The second-order benefit is dust exposure. Emptying a normal robot bin is a small cloud of fine dust every few days; emptying a compressed block once a month is one quick, contained motion. If anyone in the house has dust allergies that difference matters more than the convenience does.

Suction, Brush and What It Actually Picks Up

7,800 Pa is a headline number, and headline numbers on robot vacuums are close to meaningless on their own — what matters is whether the airflow reaches the floor. Here it does. On hard floors the Freo X Plus lifted spilled rice, dry cereal and the sort of grit that gets tracked in from a driveway in a single pass, and on low-pile rugs it needed two passes for ground-in crumbs, which is normal at any price.

The bigger practical win is the brush. It is a conical brush on a single floating arm rather than a full-width roller caged at both ends, and hair genuinely does not wrap it. Over six weeks of testing in a house with one long-haired occupant and a cat, the brush needed cutting free exactly zero times. Anyone who has spent Sunday morning with scissors and a tangled roller will understand why that is the feature worth paying for.

Edge performance is average. The tri-laser sensors keep it from bumping furniture hard, which is good for skirting boards and bad for the last inch of dust against them. It will not replace a corner pass with a stick vacuum, and it does not claim to.

Mopping Is Real, But It Is Still a Damp Pad

The mop applies 6N of downward pressure through a 280 ml tank, and it lifts 9 mm when the robot detects carpet. Both of those specs are honest. Dried coffee splashes and dusty film come up; anything sticky and set — jam, dried sauce — gets smeared, then partially lifted on the second pass, then left as a faint ghost.

What it does very well is maintenance mopping. Running it every day on a kitchen and hallway keeps the floors in the state where you never need a real mop, which is the actual value proposition of every robot mop ever made. Treat it as the thing that stops floors getting bad rather than the thing that fixes floors that already are.

There is no auto-wash and no auto-dry here — that is what the more expensive Freo X Ultra and Freo Z models add. You rinse the pad yourself and hang it up. At $160 that is a fair place to draw the line, but leaving a damp pad clipped to the robot in a warm room will smell within two days, so build the rinse into the routine.

Limitations and Compromises

The app is the problem, and it is worth being blunt about it. The Freo X Plus averages 4.0 stars, and reading the one- and two-star reviews the pattern is overwhelmingly connectivity: pairing failures, maps lost after a firmware update, schedules that silently stop running. The robot itself almost never appears in the complaints. If you want a machine you configure once and never touch, this is not that machine.

It is 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi only. Most modern routers broadcast a single combined network name across both bands, and the Freo X Plus will not join it reliably. You will likely need to split the bands or create a temporary 2.4 GHz-only guest network to get through setup, which is an unreasonable thing to ask of a mainstream buyer in 2026.

There is no self-emptying station, no mop washing and no mop drying. The compression bin is a clever answer to the first of those but does nothing about the other two.

Obstacle avoidance is laser-based, not camera-based. It handles table legs and shoes well and cables and small toys inconsistently. If you have a floor that regularly has charging cables on it, do a pre-run tidy or expect an occasional tangle.

Cleaning, Maintenance, or Setup

Setup takes about twenty minutes if your Wi-Fi cooperates and considerably longer if it does not. Do the band split first, before you unbox anything — it converts the most common failure into a non-event. Run the first map with interior doors open and floors clear; a good first map is worth more than any setting you will change later.

Empty the compressed bin when the app flags it rather than on a schedule, and do it over an outdoor bin — a compressed block breaks apart on the way out. Rinse the filter under cold water monthly and let it dry completely for 24 hours before refitting; a damp filter is the usual cause of a sudden drop in suction that people mistake for a dying motor.

The mop pad should come off and be rinsed after every wet run. The side brush and the conical main brush need almost nothing, which is the point of the design, but check the front caster wheel every month or so — that is where hair actually collects on this machine.

Who Should Buy It?

• People who want self-emptying convenience without surrendering a corner to a full-size dock
• Households with shedding pets or long hair — the tangle-free brush is the standout feature here
• Hard-floor-dominant homes where daily maintenance mopping keeps things from ever getting bad
• Anyone with dust allergies who wants to handle the bin once a month instead of twice a week
• Buyers comfortable troubleshooting a Wi-Fi setup once to get $400-class cleaning for $160

Look elsewhere if you want something that works perfectly out of the box with no network fiddling, if your home is mostly thick carpet, or if you need mop washing and drying handled for you — the Freo X Ultra and Freo Z lines exist precisely for that and cost two to four times as much. Anyone who simply wants floors clean now, with no app at all, is better served by a good cordless stick vacuum.

SoftPickr Verdict

The NARWAL Freo X Plus earns 7.7/10. The hardware is better than the price suggests. Suction is genuinely strong, the tangle-free brush removes the single most annoying maintenance job in robot vacuums, and the compressing bin is a smarter answer to the emptying problem than most of the industry has come up with. For $160 that is a lot of machine.

The one compromise is the software. Setup is fussy on modern dual-band routers, and the app is where nearly every unhappy review lands. Buy it knowing you may spend an evening getting it onto your network, and it is a strong recommendation. Buy it expecting an appliance that just works, and the 4.0 average rating is telling you exactly what will happen.

NARWAL Freo X Plus — Frequently Asked Questions

Does the NARWAL Freo X Plus empty itself?

Not into a dock — it compresses instead. After each run the NARWAL Freo X Plus packs the debris it collected into a sealed bin, and Narwal rates that bin for up to seven weeks before it needs emptying. In a home with one shedding pet, expect closer to five. The dock is a slim charging plate with no vacuum motor and no bags to buy.

Will it work on 5 GHz Wi-Fi?

No. It joins 2.4 GHz networks only, and this is the single most common setup failure. If your router broadcasts one network name across both bands, split them temporarily or set up a 2.4 GHz guest network for pairing. Once it is on the network it stays on it; the problem is almost entirely at first connection.

Is it good for pet hair?

Yes, and this is its strongest area. The conical brush sits on a single floating arm rather than being caged at both ends, so hair passes into the bin instead of wrapping around the roller. Across six weeks of testing in a home with a cat and a long-haired occupant, the brush never needed to be cut free.

Does it wash and dry its own mop pad?

No. Mop washing and drying are reserved for the more expensive Freo X Ultra and Freo Z models. Here you rinse the pad by hand and hang it to dry. Leaving a damp pad clipped to the robot in a warm room will start to smell within a couple of days, so make rinsing part of the routine.
