Two Heads, One Tool

Flip it one way and a blade sweeps the grounds flat; flip it over and the flat side tamps. MATOW’s instructions are to set the height, twist to lock, polish the grounds with the blade side, then flip over and press. Because the tamper side stops at a set depth rather than a set force, the puck ends up the same height every time, which is a different way of getting consistency from a spring tamper.

Setting the Depth

Both sides adjust separately and lock. The listing says to unlock before first use. Its tip is worth repeating: dose the basket fully, or the palm tamper will not compress the coffee enough, because it only goes as deep as you set it.

Which Brevilles It Fits

MATOW lists the Barista Express, Pro, Touch, Touch Impress, Bambino Plus, Infuser and Duo-Temp Pro. That list includes the Bambino Plus, which makes this a useful alternative for Bambino owners worried by the IKAPE listing’s Bambino warning.

Limitations and Compromises

A palm tamper applies whatever force the depth setting allows, so a light dose gives a loose puck. There is no spring and no click. It is sized for Breville baskets only; 51 mm and 58 mm owners need a different listing. The blade side is not a WDT tool and will not break up clumps.

Who Should Buy It?

  • You own a Breville 54 mm machine, including the Bambino Plus
  • You want to level and tamp with one tool
  • You dose the same weight every shot
  • You find pressing a handle awkward and prefer palm pressure

Skip it if your dose changes a lot from shot to shot; a spring tamper such as the IKAPE 53.3 mm copes better with that.

SoftPickr Verdict

The MATOW scores 8.3/10. It is the most-rated tool here (5,150 ratings) and the simplest way to get a level, same-height puck on a Breville, at $35.99 when we checked. Prices on Amazon move; the live listing is the only accurate source. See how it compares with six other tampers in our best espresso tamper guide.

MATOW 53 mm distributor and tamper — Frequently Asked Questions

Is the MATOW a tamper or a distributor?

Both: one side is a distributor/leveler and the other is a palm tamper.

Does it fit the Breville Bambino Plus?

The listing names the Bambino Plus among compatible machines.

Why doesn’t it tamp hard enough?

MATOW says the basket must be fully dosed; the palm side only goes as deep as you set it.

Do I still need a WDT tool?

The blade levels the surface but does not break up clumps; a WDT tool does.
