What a WDT Tool Does
WDT (Weiss Distribution Technique) means stirring the ground coffee in the basket with thin needles before you tamp. Grinders, especially budget ones, produce clumps; clumps create dense and loose spots, and water channels through the loose ones. Stirring breaks the clumps and evens out the bed so the tamp compresses a uniform puck.
Adjustable Needle Spread
The T6126 lets you change how far the eight needles spread, so you can cover a narrow 51 mm basket or a wide 58 mm one with the same tool. MHW-3BOMBER says the stainless needles resist bending and includes six spares, with simple replacement.
One-Hand Magnetic Stand
The tool sits on a magnetic stand instead of in a cap or tube, so you can pick it up and put it down with one hand while the other holds the portafilter. The body is aluminum alloy rather than plastic.
Limitations and Compromises
WDT adds a step, and it does little for pressurized baskets or pre-ground coffee. Thin needles can bend if you jab them into the basket floor, which is why the spares matter. At $21.59 it costs more than the many unbranded needle stirrers under $10; you are paying for the metal body, the stand and the adjustable spread.
Setup and Care
Tap the needles clean after each use and wipe them with a dry cloth. Swap a bent needle for one of the six spares rather than straightening it.
Who Should Buy It?
- You grind fresh beans at home
- Your shots channel or spray from a bottomless portafilter
- You own more than one portafilter size
- You want a tool that stays put on the counter
Skip it if you use pre-ground coffee or pressurized baskets. If you want a WDT tool plus a tamper for a Breville machine, the Reoszeank 54 mm kit includes one.
